Ca Trù is a form of traditional chamber music hailing from North and North Central Vietnam, dating from the 15th century. The defining feature of Ca Trù music is an entrancing female poet-singer clacking a wooden or bamboo instrument called a phach, accompanied by a lutist playing the three-stringed đàn đáy, and a drummer playing the trống chầu; Ca Trù requires a minimum of three performers. Originating as music in the royal courts, Ca Trù performers later formed clubs that entertained the wealthy and civil intelligentsia with not only song, but witty and artistic conversation and food: the female poet-singer was a charming hostess not unlike the Japanese geisha. The term Ca Trù refers to the bamboo tally cards patrons used at these establishments; payment for a poet-singer was counted by the tally cards they accrued.

In the 17th century, many of these clubs were located near the Đồng Xuân Market in the centre of Hanoi, on Hàng Mã “Paper” Street. Today, this is the location of several karaoke and disco clubs. A row of Ca Trù clubs also lined Kham Thien Street, in Hanoi’s neighbouring western district; as late as the French Colonial period Kham Thien was famous for being an entertainment centre. Ca Trù is also known as Cô Đầu, Ả Đao, and Nhà Trò. The National Ca Trù Festival, first held in Hà Tĩnh in 2005, is organised by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to fulfill the commitment of the Government of Vietnam to UNESCO on the protection of world cultural heritage in the conservation and promote the intangible cultural heritage of Ca Trù.
